TAHLEQUAH, OK In recognition of their military service, the Cherokee
Nation recently honored Jim Weaver of the Chalk Bluff community and
Ronnie McLemore of Tahlequah during its October Tribal Council meeting.
We appreciate the dedication and commitment our military men and women have provided to our tribe and our country, said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. It is important to recognize these individuals for their allegiance to the Cherokee Nation, our country and citizens. Ronnie McLemore was born in Stilwell and raised in the Cookson Hills. The son of the late Jess and Dora McLemore, he graduated from Chilocco in 1953. McLemore joined the U.S. Army in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1956. After his military service, McLemore worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Haskell Institute in Kansas. He retired in 1988 and resides in Tahlequah. McLemore enjoys square dancing, motorcycling and country/western dancing. I am very proud of the fact that I had the privilege to serve my country and of my Cherokee heritage, said McLemore. I am proud of my family and the contribution that I have made for their freedom and the freedom of others. Jim Weaver was born in Bunch to the late Dick and Nancy Weaver. He attended schools in Lyon Switch, Greasy and Cave Springs. Weaver joined the U.S. Army in 1943 at 18 years of age and later joined the U.S. Marines. He served during wartime and survived several invasions in both World War II and the Korean War. Weaver was stationed in Europe and the South Pacific. Throughout his military career, he was recommended for several awards including three Bronze Stars and a Silver Star. Weaver was pictured on the cover of Stars and Stripes Magazine and Post Magazine for a courtesy that he extended to his fallen comrades. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Today, Weaver is retired and lives in the Chalk Bluff community. The Cherokee Nation is proud to honor our military, said Smith. It is a privilege each month to recognize their accomplishments.
